Horan Reflects on Time with Rush
Lindsey Horan was on the plane ride home a successful showing at the She Believes Cup, where she dawns the USWNT’s three stars and showed she’s ready to be part of the team’s next generation when we caught up with her recently.
Her journey started as a talented youngster with the Colorado Rush, where she learned the game, became the top college prospect in the country but opted instead for an adventure abroad with Paris Saint-Germain.
Now back stateside and readying for her debut season in the NWSL with the Portland Thorns, Horan is showing the culture in her game and the abilities she sharpened with Rush on the international stage in the Stars and Stripes set up.
Horan answered our questions about how the club impacted her development as an elite youth player and taught her lessons she still uses everyday in her professional career. With the ultimate goal being a trip to Rio this summer and claiming a gold medal, Horan is rooted in the Rush way and serves as an inspiration to young players across the country.

14 Boys Champs at Real Cup
Congratulations to Coach Todd Morris and the U14 Rush boys who won the Real Cup over the weekend. A 2-0 win over Broomfield capped things off (goals from Cade Cowan and Hunter Ripley) but the team also beat Olympico 2-0, St Vrain 3-1, and SD Sioux City 2-1 on the way to winning their bracket and topping Broomfield in the final. Well done boys!!
Rush Dolphins win Stenger
Colorado Rush’s U7 Dolphins, coached by Alicia Archuleta, won the Stenger Invitational over Memorial Day Weekend.
The team, participating in its first tournament, played with passion, teamwork, and creativity, putting away 36 goals in four games. The girls also played with throw-ins for the first time and got used to not having a coach on the field with them.
Coach Archuleta, who is a Colorado Rush alumna herself and coaches next year’s U12 Nero girls team, is excited for what these talented young players have in their future.
Horan Comes Home
In the summer of 2012 when Lindsey Horan signed a professional contract with the PSG Women in France, she knew it might be awhile before she played again in America. Four years later, Horan, a seasoned pro at 22 years old, and now a full member of the US Women’s National Team, returned to play her first professional game within her home state of Colorado against powerhouse Japan as both teams prepare for the Olympics this summer in Rio.
The game did not start the way the Americans would hope as Japan opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added on in the 22nd to keep the sold out, standing room only crowd quiet. Another Colorado product making her professional debut in state, Mallory Pugh played a great cross into the box finding Alex Morgan in the 27th minute to go 2-1 down into halftime.
A red card ejection to Japan in the 57th minute give the Americans some hope of a comeback and on came Horan who did not start as she was returning from a slight injury. A second goal from Alex Morgan in the 64th minute equaled the score and set up the Golden, Colorado native Horan for the grand finale.
With the game clock ticking into the 89th minute, defender Kelley O’Hara broke in down the left wing and played in a floated ball right to the PK spot where Horan was waiting and expertly headed the ball passed the oncoming Japanese goalkeeper for the 3-2 lead!
Sadly not all fairy tales end on a high note as Japan pushed hard in extra time and found a game tying goal in the 93rd minute.
Ever the professional, the Woman of the Match Horan graciously spoke with the TV media at the game and then with a huge eruption of cheers from the grandstand (led by Master of Rush Cheers Russell Finch) came over for pictures, selfies and dozens of autographs for the numerous Colorado Rush players who had gathered to sing chants for Lindsey during the game.
Coach Finch teaching new chants during the game | Lindsey with her former CO Rush Coach Brian Lux |
It was truly a great moment from a great pro and a great ambassador for the Rush. Thank you for all you do Lindsey and we all look forward to seeing you go for Olympic Gold this summer!
Until next time... Thanks Lindsey! |
ECNL PDA Recap
The Colorado Rush U15, U16 and U17 ECNL teams were in action over Memorial Day Weekend as they participated in the PDA Showcase in hot and humid Zarephath, New Jersey.
U15's
The girls finished with a 1-1-1 record. The PDA Complex was a beautiful facility that had an abundance of well groomed fields and humidity. The girls played a strong, well-possessed game against FC Stars Massachusetts, a tough opponent ranked 5th in the nation by TDS. Erin Hohnstein found Tessa Barton in the box for the game winning goal!
The Michigan Hawks, another top ranked team, were next in the lineup. The U15's faced them last summer in Seattle in an exciting match that ended in a 1-1 draw. In this rematch, defense lead the team with amazing saves from goalie Alisa Crooks and center back Bella Scaturro but the team came up with short with another 0-0 draw.
U16's
The U16s opened the weekend playing great possession soccer against #8 Jacksonville FC in sweltering 95 degree heat. The defense held JFC and striker Grace Kiser, who has scored 18 goals on the season, to a 0-0 tie. The next afternoon presented the same scorching heat, but playing FC Boca, another team in the SE conference. Boca struck early with a goal tapped in after bobbling around in the box from a corner kick. Striker Hailey Stodden answered back with a shot from distance, assisted by right back Kyra Midroy. Rush had several other opportunities, including a saved PK, but couldn't convert. Scored ended with a 1-1 tie. Two points were good, but Rush was looking for a win against FC Heat from Nevada on Monday. The rain stayed away, but the humidity was stifling. Longer grass and tired legs slowed the Rush. Heat scored a nice goal off the pipes in the first half. Rush came on strong in the second half, creating many opportunities, but couldn't put one in the back of the net. Rush lost 1-0. It was a long flight home for some tired and sunburnt girls, but the team should be proud of the quality soccer played.
U17's
The U17's faced a very tough schedule and went 1-2 with losses agaisnt Albertson Fury and Sockers FC to start the event but finished strong with a 2-0 win over Charlotte Soccer Academy behind goals from Sarah Masinter and Taylor Steinke.
RUID – U19 Girls Win State Championship
Well, let’s start by looking all the way back to 2007 when this team consisted of wee little U11 babies, when two U10 Rush rival recreational teams, the Red-Eyed Tree Frogs and Chaos, combined and started off their career as competitive players. With some players leaving and some crucial additions along the way, they finally can proudly call themselves State Cup champs at 19 years old: the beginning of one last ride. Although it may not completely compare to the U15 ECNL National Championship, this game meant quite a bit to this team. Actually, the plan was to automatically qualify for Regionals since Rush was originally the only team to enter in the U19 State Cup, but with a late entry by a long-time rival Real team, they were forced to play one final game to declare a State champion. Let’s be honest, though, would the championship really be as awesome if they didn’t have to play their archrival? So yeah, a 3-1 win over Real made the taste of victory that much sweeter.
Sadly, on Saturday, Rush was missing quite a few key components from the original crew. Mr. Erik Bushey couldn’t make it out to Gates Soccer Complex because he apparently has higher priorities in Switzerland or something (I don’t know what could be more important than having a reunion with the greatest team of all time, but I guess he just missed the memo). Luckily, Coach Blanco came to the rescue and didn’t leave the alums stranded. They also suffered low numbers due to missing players such as Jordan DiBiasi, Bri Curtis, Gabi Gines, and Bre Robertson. However, the team will be complete in Boise, so after seeing how promising they looked on Saturday, it’s exciting to think about what they can achieve in the near future. Thankfully, U18 studs Kayla Stark and Shannon Mooney guest played on Saturday to help out the old women.
In spite of not being able to practice once with the entire team back together, it was pretty amazing how well the U19s gelled and regrouped after almost a year of not playing together. I guess you could say that the devastating loss last June to West Coast F.C. is all too fresh in their minds and to say they are hungry for one last chance at a national championship is a massive understatement.
How unique of a feeling it was to wear the R (and the Chevy sign) on our chests again and to play one last time together in Colorado in front of family and friends. Of course, the game was physical, but the good soccer and incomparable team chemistry of the good guys (aka Rush) won out. Jastin Redman began the scoring with a beautiful finish to the bottom right corner (ladies and gentlemen, the Redman magic is back and better than ever). Not long after, keeper Shannon Mooney made an incredible save to keep the one-goal lead. Rush then increased the lead to 2-0 after the infamous Max Flom dribbled furiously into the box, and drew a handball from her cross. Betsy Brandon then finished the penalty kick into the top left corner. Good thing she got all her misses out in practice just days before…
After a solid 45 minutes, Rush entered the second half with the two-goal lead. Unfortunately, Real drew an indirect free kick in the box and in an attempt to block the shot, Redman got her head on the ball and it ended up in the top corner of our own goal (she was really just trying to keep the parents on their toes). It didn’t take Rush long to bounce back though. Flom flew down the left side once again and finished with a perfect cross to the near post where Brandon tried to turn but instead got her legs swiped right out from underneath her. This resulted in penalty number two of the game, which was effortlessly finished in the top right corner by none other than Kayla Hill.
So there you have it. Three for the good guys, one for the other guys…but you could technically say four for the good guys since, in all reality, Redman is the one who finished that beautiful header into her own goal. We are still waiting for our medals, but we are sure that they will be delivered very soon. Somehow Coach Blanco was able to slip away after the game without getting an ice chest dumped on his head. In the picture included, the team is hoisting up a chocolate milk trophy, because recovery is everything and preparation for Boise started right when the final whistle blew (valuable lessons brought to you by Sean Bushey).
That’s all for today, but stay tuned and don’t forget to follow the old women on the Colorado Rush social media pages for updates at Regionals. #RUID
